whereabouts exists because Molly got tired of firms that talk about values and then don't reflect them in how they actually operate. Specifically in who they hire, who they take on as clients, how they treat their people, and what they're willing to say out loud.
This is our attempt to do it differently.
TL;DR To work at whereabouts is to work somewhere that will actually try to support you. Not in a performative way, but in the practical, day-to-day sense of treating you like an actual person with a life outside of work.
We're still building. We don't have everything figured out. But we're doing it honestly, and we'd rather be a small firm that lives its values than a large one that prints them on the wall.

whereabouts is a women-led, LGBTQ+-owned, and disabled-owned geospatial consulting firm. Those aren't checkboxes for us. They describe who we are and shape how we work. Our certifications matter to us because the values behind them do.
We believe that the best geospatial work comes from teams and organizations that actually reflect the communities they serve. We try to practice that ourselves by exercising constant mindfulness in how we hire, in which clients we take on, and in how we show up for the people we work with.

We are a remote-first and remote-only organization. That's not a pandemic holdover. It's a deliberate choice. Remote work is better for flexibility, better for access, and better for the kinds of people we want to work with and work for. Plus, Molly really hates fluorescent lighting.
Our core hours are Tuesday through Thursday. Outside of that, we trust our people to manage their own time. We care about the work getting done well, not about when someone's status indicator turns green.
We believe in being aggressively accommodating. That means we work to meet colleagues and clients exactly where they are, in terms of communication style, working preferences, accessibility needs, and life circumstances. We won't always get it right, but it's something we actively work toward rather than assume we've already achieved.

We work with a small team. That means every person matters a lot, and we're selective. Not about credentials, but about character.
We're looking for people who are genuinely curious, honest about what they don't know, and committed to doing good work without needing someone to look over their shoulder. People who care about the communities their work affects. People who can disagree directly and move forward together. People who respect each other because they chose to, not because they’re expected to.
We are an inclusive workplace in the specific sense. We don't ask people to leave parts of themselves at the door. We build our culture, our policies, and our working environment to support people across race, gender, sexuality, disability, and background.

We work primarily with nonprofits, government agencies, conservancies, human and animal health organizations, and civic tech teams . Notably, organizations trying to do important work, often with limited resources. Mission-driven. That's a deliberate choice too.
We think geospatial tools should be accessible to the organizations that need them most, not just the ones with the biggest IT budgets. Our pricing reflects that. So does the work we take on.
